What to make of it all: Harriet Miers withdraws Supreme Court nomination

So by now you no doubt know that Harriet Miers has withdrawn her Supreme Court nomination.

To be honest, I have no idea what bush was thinking in regards to her being nominated in the first place. The nomination smacked of cronyism of the highest degree, and after the "brownie" incident you'd have thought he had learned his lesson.

I think its a true sign of the distance bush has put to karl rove, that he would try such a stunt, granted her timely withdrawal will do wonders to divert the attention of the American public from rove's own legal woes, I can't imagine that the Mier's nomination was anything other then bush's idea.

Its another instance in which bush has underestimated the situation, not unlike Iraq, he didn't expect as much opposition to a decision he's made. Years of a republican run senate bowing and licking at your heels will do that.

So was it simply a cases of inflated ego? Did he feel that because he had gone unquestioned by his supporters, up until now, that he could make such a ridiculous move and get away with it?

Honestly? I have no idea, watching the conservative agenda self-destruct lately is sort of like watching a bad CBS television show, you want it to be good, but it still feels like something your grandma would watch.
