Over the weekend I saw the documentary The God Who Wasn't There, not a bad movie, not a great one. It started out really well, but was too short and the ending seemed more cathardic for the filmmaker then relevant to the movie.

But it did bring up some interesting things, mainly through the interviews of christians. On in particular:

"101 Last Day Prophecies, just some of the things that are supposed to happen:

Literal Babylon, formerly called "Babel", would reemerge in the land of Shinar, The land of Shinar is known as modern day iraq, and Saddamn Hussien spent over 20 years rebuilding literal babylon. As a matter of fact he had Madonna come in and Christen it."

This prompted me to look up 101 Last Day Prophecies to see for myself. I just can't get around the coincidence of the "Land of Shinar" reference in the rapture, or the coincidence of key members of the bush administration being affiliated with the The Project for the New American Century, a group who had advocated rebuilding the middle east starting with Iraq.

So Iraq is mentioned in the rapture, and the architects for the war in Iraq belong to an organization that advocated just such an action...

Makes me think.

The loyalty to bush is amazing, it crosses from politics and into the realm of friendship. People generally LIKE george bush, but is that enough for him to be president?

As more and more evidence as to how incompetent the bush administration comes out, the more people will question their feelings about bush. Feelings are more dangerous then rational thoughts, because feelings are more personal and not governed by logic. I enjoy Enrique Iglesias' "Escape", for not explicable reason, I just think its catchy. In the same way I like "Escape" people like bush, and when pressed for a reason why they like him, they can't give you any real concrete ones. Well they can't give you concrete answers as to why they think bush would be a good president, mostly their answers are for why bush would be a good drinking buddy or church goer.

So as the veil of the emperors new clothes is revealed, the urge to say "I told you so" becomes more and more prominent. This, however, will do more harm then good.

Human beings do not like to be wrong, or admit to being wrong. Most people have the point of view that you are the asshole. You get cut off in traffic, you honk your horn, you're the asshole, not the person who didn't signal, or check to see if the way was clear.

So factor in that support of bush is the equivalent of a woman, on her cell phone, putting on makeup, cutting you off in traffic without signaling. Who's the asshole?

There is a culture war in this country, between the "elitists" and the "religious nuts", part of bush's election was a direct slap in the face from one side of the country who feels that the other side of the country looks down on them. This is evident by the use of the phrase "we won, get over it", as if voting for president of the united states is like voting for the greek guy on American Idol.

When dealing with this mentality it is so easy for the truth to backfire in your face. Unfortunately at this critical juncture in time, we neither have the time or the patience to deal with the learning curve, which just makes the situation worse.

Its a catch 22, the situation is not really open to nuance, the fine balance between reaffirming people's new found clarity all the while resisting the urge to say "I told you so", but its something that needs to happen.

Being a liberal white male, the "n" word makes me feel uncomfortable. It isn't just the meaning of the word, the word itself is just ugly to see and ugly to say. Unfortunately, the "n" word is making a big comeback thanks to Dave Chappelle and the Boondocks.

Dave Chappelle helped to start the ball rolling, his highly popular show is highly quotable, "n" word and all. Dave lamented that this was wearing on him as he confessed to Oprah that during a shoot, one white worker laughed inappropriately to a race inspired joke.

The Boondocks is worse, going so far as to have a fantasy episode where Martin Luther King Jr, after awaking from a comma (instead of having died as a result of sniper's bullet), is disgusted at how his "dream" has been perverted.

This is America, and I honestly believe in freedom of speech, but when I find dropping the n-bomb to be a casual affair, maybe its time to think about the responsibility of free speech. I am in no way suggesting that these shows be censored, just that the writers may want to rethink what they are doing. Granted rap music has been doing this for years, and their over use of the n-word is one of the reasons I don't enjoy rap, however the Chappelle show and the Boondocks are some of the smartest and funniest television on tv in recent years, but is the price of this work worth the resurgence of one of the most repugnant words in the American language?

A comment on admitting you made a mistake

In his article When does the "self-correcting" blogosphere start to self-correct? Glenn Greenwald talks about a refusal to self-correct oneself on the conservative side, he says:

Before the Capitol Police acknowledged yesterday that there was no legal basis for removing, let alone arresting, Cindy Sheehan -- to the contrary, they admitted that they "screwed up" because "Sheehan didn't violate any rules or laws" -- numerous Bush followers in the blogosphere were celebrating Sheehan's detention on the ground that she broke the law. Many of them were calling for all sorts of punishments to be imposed on Rep. Lynn Woolsey, who invited Sheehan to the speech and therefore aided and abetted her "illegal" behavior.

Yesterday I participated in a discussion of the Sheehan incident in a discussion group, the opinions ran right down the party line, with no spill over. The conservatives felt Sheehan had acted illegally, the liberals felt that her arrest was illegal.

Now that the police are admitting to a mistake, the conservatives are quiet... why? Nobody likes to admit they are wrong.

It's human nature, we don't like to admit that we made a mistake, that we were wrong, pride just won't us do it. Case in point, any time bush is wrong, he refuses to accept responsibility for it. What kind of message does this send to our kids?

Martha Stewart, broke the law and went to jail, she returns with absolutely no remorse, and publicly complains about having to wear and ankle device. I haven't seen one point where she says "Guess I shouldn't have broken the law".

What does this say to the future generations when people like bush and stewart refuse to accept responsibility for their actions? How do I justify to my child that they must fess up to having broken the lamp when the president of the united states refuses to. bush once confessed he was worried that kids may try pot because he had, well what about lying, and refusing to accept responsibility for ones actions?

What's worse, it seems since bush took office that this kind of behavior is becoming more and more prevalent.

So its no surprise that conservative blogs refuse to admit they made a mistake, or worse, that they are so quick to allow a woman to go to jail simply because they don't like her stance on the war, when the president himself refuses to admit he made a mistake or tell the truth in congress.

As expected Charges against Sheehan dropped

It has been argued that Sheehan resisted arrest and thus the reason for her arrest, granted given the following statement:

“Neither guest should have been confronted about the expressive T-shirts,” Gainer’s statement said.

Is resisting an illegal action grounds for arrest? If you know the cop in question is incorrect in their judgement and you "don't respond" to their orders, can you be arrested? If so, its once step closer to the iron curtain.

Sheehan claims that she had little chance to "not respond" and was whisked away seconds after removing her coat. Also the fact that a Representatives' wife was ejected, not arrested, caused some concern. Beverly Young was asked to leave for wearing a pro-war t-shirt, Cindy Sheehan was arrested for wearing and anti-war one.

Regardless of the next day legalities, the actions did what they were meant to do, and no show any sign of dissent in front of the president.

Boycott UPS! The continuing story...

As my crusade against UPS continues, I recently chatted with some friends about their experiences, to say that we had similar experiences is and understatement... let me explain.

One friend told me that UPS had attempted delivery, despite being home the entire day, not uncommon, they were then told they could pick the package up at the delivery center. Once they got there they were told it was still on the truck, so they drove up and down the streets of Brooklyn till they could find the truck (probably at a dough nut shop) and demanded their package.

Another friend told me how he too stayed home for a delivery, got a "Delivery Attempted" notice and proceeded to call the dispatcher, after informing the dispatcher about the invention of the radio and and cell phones he received his package.

I also learned that UPS is union, Teamsters, suddenly it all makes sense. I've never had this problem with FedEx or Airborne Express, only UPS.

For the record, I am in favor of the theory of unions, I believe that the union used to be a proud and noble endeavor, now, however, it has become a symptom of the corruption it fought so hard against.

On a side note, I did a google search for Boycott UPS! I was pleasantly surprised to see my site appear on the first page, but was disturbed that I share that honor with a group who's intention of boycotting UPS is based on their refusal to ship firearms.

What a dilemma, I hate UPS for their inability to deliver a package on time, but admire them for taking a stance against firearms...

9:20 pm Twenty minutes in to his State of the Union Address and already people around the country are drunk from having done a shot everytime bush used his key words: terror (pronounced terrah), evil, freedom, democracy, weapons of mass destruction.

I am not sure why I am watching this, its nothing new. Same ole same ole, he speaks a lot but says nothing.

The next three years are going to be hard.

Alito confirmed to Supreme Court

Not that it was any surprise but Scalito now has a life time appointment to the Supreme Court... one more nail in the coffin that was the United States.

Yesterday the senate was able to get the 60 votes necessary to end discussions on Alito, 75 to be precise, yet alito only passed with 58 votes.

Had the the Democrats that voted against Scalito today had voted to continue discussions yesterday a filabuster would have been in affect.

I am utterly disgusted with the Democratic party at the moment, and am seriously considering changing parties. the way things are going we're headed towards a one party system so why bother with the pretense that we actually have a choice in this country.

I saw the Willy Wonka remake by Tim Burton via NetFlix, I wasn't a fan, had I seen it in the theater at $10.75 a ticket I would have probably sued to get my money back.

It got me thinking, how is it that Director's like Tim Burton are allowed to continue to make films? Now don't get me wrong, he's had some hits, Edward Scissors hands, Batman, Big Fish, Sleepy Hollow, and Ed Wood were good but he should be flogged for butchering Planet of the Apes, Batman Returns, and Mars Attacks!.

Man was Planet of the Apes bad.

Stephen Spielberg is another director who's number of good movies in recent years is out numbered by the bad ones War of the Worlds was so bad it made me angry, combine that with Minority Report (crap) and AI (pungent crap) my desire to see anything with his name attached to it is relegated to NetFlix.

The man should be stewed in his own pudding for what he did to E.T. see if I ever by that on DVD, legally.

Another director I wish someone would have said "you know, this is really bad" is George Lucas. Looking back on it, he only directed the original Star Wars movie, the other two he had help with script and directing, why not with the new ones?

Somewhere there is a parallel universe where someone said "You know George, this story is complete shyte" and George said "Damn, you're right"

If only I could live in that universe.

george bush got his wish, he wanted democracy to spread and it has, but not the way he wanted it to.

Don't get me wrong, I am not in favor of a terrorist organization ruling in Palestine, but democracy has won out, the fact that we don't like the results, well... what are you going to do?

Its also a bit distressing that Condoleezza Rice is now advocating other countries not to help Hamas Palestinian government

I find these articles hilarious... its a testament as to how out much of a dinosaur the MPAA is that no one has targeted inflated ticket prices at the theater as one of the factors as to why there may be a slump.

With ticket prices as high as $11.25 in NYC and concession stands requiring a credit check to purchase popcorn, it is little wonder why lyrics like the following can be found in the viral hit Lazy Sunday:

"Yo stop at the deli, the theater's over priced."
"You got the backpack"
"gonna pack it up nice"

DVD availability and piracy may be contribute to it, but for my contribution, inflated ticket prices is what keeps me away. The amount of low quality movies + high ticket prices = Netflix.

The president of Exhibitor Relations says that last year's box office slump should serve as a "wakeup call" to the movie industry. In an interview with Fox News Channel, Paul Dergarabedian remarked, "It's fair warning with plenty of time to fix things. If ignored, it's at the peril of the entire industry." Dergarabedian suggested that there was no quick cure for the downturn at the box office. "This convergence of technology and culture, combined with so many options for entertainment, has created a pie with so many slices now. It's tougher and tougher to grab a piece," he said. He indicated that he believes the solution is not releasing movies in theaters and on DVD simultaneously, as some studio executives, including Disney CEO Robert Iger, have recommended. Bloomberg keeps saying those striking are breaking the law, well mister bloomberg, some times the law must be broken. Rosa Parks broke the law, and at one point the law said that black people were property. Using the "they're breaking the law" argument just doesn't fly, being a billionaire seems to have made you forget that.

Both George Pataki and Michael Bloomberg went to the same school of political melodrama. Both men are treating the TWU like criminals, technically they are, and refuse to discuss the situation as long as they are on strike...

Ok, hold up... when was the last transit strike? 1980. 25 years ago. I could understand treating these blue collar workers like criminals if they went on strike every year... but 25 years is enough time to give them some leeway.

Put the pressure on the MTA, George.

I think it says a lot about Fernando Ferrer that people voted for Mike Bloomberg for reelection of NYC. That said, Bloomberg is a prick. His attitude towards the TWU "illegal strike" is just appalling, Bloomberg seems to have forgotten what it was to not be a corporate thug. Bloomberg's tactic is to lay all the blame on the workers, and not the MTA (Metropolitan Thugs Association).

The MTA's history is less then honest (hidden money) and yet Bloomberg is not threatening them, or pushing for a complete accounting of their business practices, instead he goes on tv and verbally bullies the TWU.

I voted for Bloomberg, I knew what I was getting into, I think that speaks more to Ferrer then anything else.

Bloomberg its time to get behind the workers, the MTA has no reason to have your loyalty or backing.

Strike looms in NYC, the group of thugs called the MTA (going your way, just not when you want to) are going to allow the first strike since the 80s to occur, the same MTA that claimed there wasn't enough money so they had to raise fares, then it turns out they had cooked the books but still raised fares, then turned out they had a multi-billion dollar surplus, so instead of giving the employees a fair contract they decided to give a pathetic token gift of 10 extra days on a limited amount of metro cards that you had to pay for in cash at booths... uh what?

I don't want a strike but the MTA is a bunch of thugs, they need to deal, so that I can take the bus, not that the bush shows up in time for me to take it anyways.

How is it bush sounds more and more like a spoiled child when talking to the country? I am listening to him, and the annoyance in his voice is so prevalent.

On a side note, he meant to say Osama Bin Laden and instead said Saddam... guess they trained him too well.

mister president you shouldn't blame the press for leaks, you should blame yourself. If leaks occur it is because people feel that what you are doing is ineffective.

Bush Threatens U.N. Over Clinton Climate Speech
Bush-administration officials privately threatened organizers of the U.N. Climate Change Conference, telling them that any chance there might’ve been for the United States to sign on to the Kyoto global-warming protocol would be scuttled if they allowed Bill Clinton to speak at the gathering today in Montreal, according to a source involved with the negotiations who spoke to New York Magazine on condition of anonymity.

AWESOME! I'm glad to see that the state of the planet is a petty enough issue for these morally superior types to play hurt feelings over petty things like Clinton speaking at the event.

These people REALLY need to get over Clinton, you'd think they'd have learned their lesson with 9/11, where dislike of Clinton caused them to ignore all the warning signs and prevent the attack. Now they're willing to doom the planet for their private vendetta.

Politics... fun... or why the hell do we do it?

When I started this blog I was filled with pent up political rage, bush, for lack of a better word, is a moron, and has stocked his cabinet full of people, well who shouldn't be there.

So I used this blog almost as a catharsis, a way to work of the political rage. Living in NYC it was hard to find people with opposing view points, and even harder to find intelligent arguments to support those opposing view points.

So I joined an email mailing list dedicated to things of a political nature, at first it was fun, I would unload my anger, debate and relax afterwards... free of the pent up politicizing. But her in lies the problem...

The members of this list quickly fall into stereotypes. The conservatives are all white, midwestern, christian, love guns, support bush (almost to the point of insanity) and all seem to follow the party line... no matter what.

If its about social security, I can almost predict the responses, the war, minimum wage, Katrina was fun, nothing like a bunch of middle class white guys sitting around talking about the ramifications of race and class in the recovery effort.

One conservative got so offended when I challenged his ability to view the situation because of his white middle class suburban status that he left the list and carried a grudge for 3 months. (I think he still thinks I think he's a racist, even telling him flat out I don't think so)

But the point of all of this is that I got burned out on politics, actually I burned out on arguing logic to people who use their feelings to define their motive. It shocks me, that a bunch of white, beer drinking, ronald Reagan, gun totting conservatives would in essences be such a bunch of pussies. A lot of the arguments, like the "War on Christmas", revolve around how they feel that they are looked down upon for their beliefs.

Give me a freakin' break. How do you deal with a segment of the population that voted for bush because the other half hurt their feelings? Its irrational, I almost want to (ok actually I did) say "I'm sorry honey, did I hurt your feelings? He's twenty bucks, go buy yourself something pretty."

So, honestly, how do you deal with a set of the population that feels that they are being persecuted for their beliefs? How do you honestly take a group of people seriously when they claim there is a war on christmas when every store and every hold song is christmas related?

Honestly I wish there was a war on christmas, I'm sick of hearing all this damn music.

So the problem with all of this is that we are dealing with two different mindsets, the conservative mindset is that they feel that they are being looked down upon, and another part of the mindset feels that they are stupid for thinking that (myself included), but therein lies the divide. If you don't believe me, then how did gay marriage become such a pivotal point in the campaign, and then completely dropped.

Republicans know this about conservatives, and they exploit it. I actually heard one conservative say that the reason why Judith Miller was fired was because she was friends with Scooter Libby...

wot wot WHAT?!?

Honestly, use your brain for once, do you honestly believe that the vaulted New York Times would fire someone over who they are friends with!?! That's insane...

And therein lies the problem.

So I finally saw my first broadway play and it was SPAMALOT. Awesome, btw, great play. The interesting part... John Kerry and his Wife, at the play.

Now you may remember that Condoleza Rice attended the play during her katrinagate jaunt in NYC, she was booed and was told "how dare you be here while people are dying"

John Kerry had no such encounter =) granted most in the audience probably voted for him. The only thing of not is that cast member Hank Azaria broke character and either made a bush impression or kerry impression, I couldn't totally make it out.

Other then that... great show!

Day 3, package still not in my possession, but now I have a yellow tag, so I know the driver actually showed up.

To say that UPS has customer services is laughable, they have someone who talks to you on the phone, but won't actually help you. I called my local delivery center and talked to "Renee" about getting my package delivered. To say that Renee was unsympathetic, is like saying bush is an idiot. Evidently it was my fault for shipping it ground, she informed me that next time I should ship it over night, actually, next time I won't use UPS at all. BOYCOTT UPS! She said I could come pick it up, I said "refund me the shipping costs and I'll pick it up". She said nothing.

The funny thing is that I said to Renee "You may remember me I screamed bloody murder at you", to which she said "Arthur?", evidently a lot of people scream bloody murder at her, not a good sign.

Yesterday I had called the manager twice, no return call, given that its UPS practice not to actually make the first delivery attempt the manager probably ducks a lot of calls. The next step is writing a letter to the company and report them to the Better Business Bureau for what its worth.

Funny thing is that I saw a DHL commercial today about a delivery guy who actually broke into the receiver's office to make sure the package would be delivered.

Hopefully DHL will crush UPS.

As soon as I got into the office today I called UPS, explained my situation and was told that someone would call me back. I gave them my work number and waited... and waited... and waited.

So four hours later I called Best Buy the company that I ordered the 95lbs box from. They get UPS on the phone and I am given the run around. Basically it comes down to one thing, it is UPS's practice not to deliver on the first attempt. The impression I got from the rep at UPS is that they don't deny this. Someone at the company puts an arbitrary delivery time in the system with a failed attempt and they do it the next day. How do I know this? No yellow tag, there's never a yellow tag on the first failed attempt.

The rep confirms I called in the morning, first he claims they called me and talked to someone (lie) then later he claims they called and got no answer (another lie).

So they tell me that its out for delivery today, but I'm not there to get it.
They can deliver it to my office, but its 95lbs, how do I get it home?
I can come pick it up, will I be refunded the money I paid to have it shipped? No answer.
I ask if they can deliver on saturday, instead of a yes or no answer I am told "any time in the next 10 business days"

So I tell him to send it back I no longer want the item, he balks again... tells me to talk to the local manager, I ask for the manager's name but they don't have it, so I call the number, ask for the manager and am told "he just stepped out" (lie) he wasn't available last night when I called as well.

Its all bullshit, had they simply been honest with me I wouldn't be so upset, but they lied and are continuing to lie to me, not unlike president bush.

For the record I don't use UPS for this very reason, they are a bad company and have no customer service skills whatsoever., but sometimes I get stuck with them and always, ALWAYS its a nightmare.
